This course examines youth justice systems in different jurisdictions around the world starting with the Canadian Youth Criminal Justice System. The aim is to introduce students to different systems of youth justice around the world and highlight their differences and similarities with the goal of identifying best practices. The international standards for youth justice (e.g. the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Administration of Juvenile Justice (Beijing Rules), the UN Rules for the Protection of Juveniles Deprived of their Liberty, the UN Guidelines for the Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency (Riyadh Guidelines) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child) are central to the discussions.
